Dol - one of the oldest settlements

One of the oldest settlements on Brac, built of stone on barren rock to preserve the scarce fields of fertile soil, it has also preserved its original architecture.
Although close to frequent tourist destinations, it remains peaceful and offers its rare visitors a comfortable rest from summer's haze, mosquitoes and noise.

What about the genuine music on the island of Brac? There is a site of local a cappella singing group named "Volat" from Pucisca, which is sadly on Croatian language, but you can hear their version of famous song Piva Klapa Ispo' Volta, and I can say I was delighted to hear it.

Some nice words about "Klapa Volat":
Klapa "Volat" is a conjunction of the past and the present times and represents a live image of pureness, simplicity and greatness of past times. "Volat" is our most beautiful "living souvenir".

Gornji Humac

Situated in the middle of the island of Brac, on the crossroads from Supetar to Bol, and towards Sumartin and Povlja is Gornji Humac.

Only Gornji Humac, by some miracle surrvived those hard times and remained the way it was- a farm village spreaded along the hills, with a church and a square in the centre of it. Houses are mostly small and made of stone, and even the bell tower is unusually small compared to other Brac churches.

Being the oldest settlement on the island, Skrip is one of the must-see destinations for every visitor to Brac.
The Brac Museum (see the picture), housed in the white roofed house known as Radojkovic. The Radojkovic Tower, which forms part of the museum, was built at the time of the Turkish invasions in the 16th century. According to legend, it was within the Roman mausoleum, which itself stands upon the so-called Cyclopean wall from 5000 B.C., that Diocletian's wife Prisca and daughter Valeria were buried.

Sutivan

Sutivan is a settlement on the north - western coast of Brac, set just opposite Split, only 13 km away from it. Sutivan is the result of the side by side existence of the island`s primeval inhabitants with the people from across the sea who were constantly imigrating and remaining there in Sutivan. It was founded in the 15th century when the old Brac settlers from the interior descended to the coast.
Today, Sutivan is lovely little town of the Mediterranean type,with beautiful tree - lined beaches and many holiday houses that stretch along the sea on both sides of town.

Well, if I got it right, they both live in LA, USA, and they will come in Mirca just to get married. For me, that is pretty romantically something. MIRCA is a small village 3km west of Supetar towards Sutivan, attracting all with its tranquillity and peace. In the old center which is full of the atmosphere of forgotten island village life, time seems to stand still. Milna alongside Bobovisce is the only settlement on the west coast of the island of Brac. Positioned deep inside the largest haven on the island, it is well protected against winds, but exposed to the warm sun. Like no other island's town, it preserved the harmony of fishermen's houses and rural architecture in the background with winding roads going to vineyards and olive-groves. This town, more than any other on the island, is oriented toward the sea through fishing and maritime affairs.

Whoever takes the road over Zaglav into picturesque dales of Brac's south-western coast, should visit Osibova bay (the name comes from Josipova=Joseph's) and see there the restored Gothic church of St. John and the new St. Joseph's church from 1863. In the later one can see the Venetian chalice of St. Joseph to which sailors took vows when in trouble seas.

Selca

Selca is an example of the transformation of a Mediterranean village into town. The houses serve their specific purposes, with clear level surfaces, without decorative excess, with tidy yards, with gardens of a high standard.
The diligent hands of Selca's stone masons knew how to give shape and form to their raw material. We find stone doorways, staircases, terraces, balconies with decorative stone balustrades. The paths and yards are covered with gravel and stone slab. The gutter-pipes under the eaves are of stone, as are the sinks in the kitchens, the table surfaces, the vases. The seats in the square, the walls, the graves and the children's toys, everything is made of stone.

Bol is famous for its beautiful beaches made of sand-like white pebbles, like fish's eye-white. Zlatni rat is considered the most beautiful beach of the Adriatic. It stretches out its white tongue almost half a kilometre towards the neighbouring island Hvar, and its cape is moved by the winds from one side to another. The centennial pine trees are impressed on the trails and ways among the houses and skirting the beaches.

Sumartin

Sumartin, a village and harbor in the cove of the same name on the south-eastern coast of the island of Brac; population 618. Chief occupations are farming, viniculture, olive growing, fishing and tourism. Situated on the regional road running along the island; ferry port and connection with Makarska. Smaller vessels can berth in the port, and larger vessels can anchor in the center of the cove.

An oasis of peace until recently, with the Franciscan monastery and the land surrounding it offering a view on an ancient sacred area, the Sumartin of today represents, together with Supetar and Bol, the gate to the island of Brac. Ferry traffic, tourist yachts and local trawlers as well as a visit to the nice museum of the monastery give an impression of a lively tourist resort.

The unpolluted sea (bathing is possible even in the port), the fresh fish catch of the local trawlers, primarily the beautiful nature, the possibility to enjoy intact scenery of the island where wholesome food (cheese, honey, lamb, wine) is produced, as well as the entertainment offer of nearby Bol make Sumartin an attractive summer resort.

- Island Brac with it`s Vidova mountain is the highest island in Adriatic area. On this mountain was during world war 2 killed son of Winston Churchill while helping local soldiers.

- With length of 40 km and width of 13 km Brac is the third biggest islands on Croatian coast. Island itself is settled for some centuries and were even found some remaining of primitive man in cave Kopacina.

- Climate is typically Mediterranean. During summer time sun shines between 9 and 12 hours per day. Brac lies in one of the sunniest Adriatic straps with 2700 sunny hours per year. Average temperature is:- during summer 24° C - 8° C during winter.

- The coast of the island is long 175 km. Numerous bay and beaches follows one another. On the northern part of the island the most known beach is Lovrecina and on the south part there is Zlatni rat.

- On the island there is 22 settlements, 12 villages and 5 deserted settlements. All cities and settlements have their own speciality and culture. Splitska is just one of them.

Lozisca

Lozisca has chosen its site in a very steep stone glade. The stone houses are strung one upon the other along the sloping lanes that stretch from the rather deep valley and reach to the top of the village.

Everything here is just a stone next to stone or a stone upon a stone. The high, large two-storey houses and the little stone cottages up to the end of the clearing. Lozisca is a munoment to the hard reality of the Brac karst and to the strange choice of theirs, of its inhabitants’ who choose the living stone and crevices to be the foundations of their dwellings in order to make room for a garden, or an olive-grove or a vineyard on the relatively fertile soil.

Bobovisca N/M

It is the port where the famous Croatian writer Vladimir Nazor spent his childhood. In his verses and his fiction he was coming back to this place all his life long. "This book is a return to one period and in one place where I've lost something. I still believe in two things: one left in that little wild cove on the island and to the other I was probably brought by the winds and by the waves. And, I am going there to serch for both." In the family house on the beach there is a little collection and nearby the house there is a statue of the great writer.

Pucisca

For as long as anyone can remember people in Pucisca have been working with stone, living for it and living from it. Although it sometimes made their lives harder, it never lessened the affection they had for it.

Stone-masonry is here a centuries old profession which is confirmed by some worked out and exhausted quarries. But the stores of good stone are still very rich. Since the Ancient times, Brac had been the source of excellent stone for the stupendous buildings.

Povlja

About 393 people live in Povlja today. They still fish, grow olives and grapes, and make wine just as their ancestors did for so many centuries before but they see their future in tourism.

Today, the main industries in Povlja are fishing, quarrying, olive growing and, of course, tourism.
